Placement Testing
Auburn Montgomery uses ACT/SAT scores as well as placement tests to determine initial placement in math and English.
If you need to take either the math or English test, you must do so before attending New Student Orientation.
Math Placement Testing
You must take the AUM Math Placement Test if you scored less than 20 on ACT Math or 540 on SAT Math in the last three years. If you have already taken the placement test, your scores are good for three years.
Click here for more detailed instructions on taking the Math Placement Test.
English Placement Testing
You must take the AUM English Placement Test only if you have not taken the ACT or SAT in the last three years. All other students’ English placement will be decided based on their ACT or SAT score.
If you scored 18 or higher on the English portion of the ACT (or 450 or higher on the critical reading portion of the SAT) in the last three years, you will be placed in English Composition I (ENGL 1010). If you scored lower, you will be placed in Basic English (ENGL 0100) and its lab component (ENGL 0101).
Final placement in Basic English and English Composition I is confirmed on the first day of class with the assistance of a diagnostic essay. Your diagnostic performance during this first class meeting determines whether you remain in the course or move to the other course.
English Placement Testing is offered on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. and Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m. The test takes approximately thirty minutes. You may not be admitted to the test if you arrive late. There is currently no charge for taking this placement test. For more information, email composition@aum.edu or call Clay Sims, the Senior Assistant for the Composition Program, at (334) 244-3384.
Honors Composition
Freshmen with a 26 or higher on the English portion of the ACT will be invited to enroll in the Honors section of ENGL 1010 (available in the fall semester only).
Freshmen with scores of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement English Literature/Composition Examination may be exempt from ENGL 1010 or invited to enroll in Honors Composition.
